Insects are critical to the ecological health of our planet. The Butterfly Garden illustrates these animals’ roles and helps visitors understand how they can help. Working with the creative director, I developed a playful signage hierarchy based on leaves. Each of the large section header leaves features a caterpillar sculpture munching away at the big idea itself. While the smaller single and double leaves provide canvases for subsection messages. Plant IDs throughout use icons to indicate how each plant benefits the garden, encouraging visitors to build their own butterfly gardens.

Interactive displays throughout the outdoor space allow visitors to play and learn about life cycles, insect qualities, pollination, and other topics. While the indoor space is focused on identifying species and being immersed in an environment full of fluttering butterflies. There’s also a window into the nursery where visitors can see butterflies emerging from chrysalides and learn which caterpillars and butterflies are of the same species.
