Terrell Place

An historic office building in Washington, DC revitalized by ESI Design to activate the lobby spaces and honor civil rights activist Mary Church Terrell.

On this site once stood the Hecht Company department store, one of many Washington, DC businesses where activist Mary Church Terrell led picket lines and sit-ins to protest systematic racial inequality. After a successful boycott campaign and Supreme Court ruling, the building was renamed in her honor.

In addition to rebranding the building and designing a wayfinding system, a critical part of my role was telling Mary Church Terrell’s story in two small exhibits – one visible to all passersby on the exterior and one inside the main lobby – which included a wall display and book for visitors to learn about her courage in photos and words.
